That’s not really a knock against him: it’s just that he doesn’t seem to want the reader to have fun, and goes for a constant feeling of dread instead.įor me, his short fiction is the best medium for his style: I can definitely enjoy plunging into his deep-thrum intensity for short bursts, but his novels require a willingness to keep dunking your mind into discomfiting worlds seen through the eyes of characters you probably won’t like.Ĭampbell is a great post-Lovecraftian writer, but I was misled by the “British Stephen King” blurbs he used to get. And, while I don’t regret reading any of his other novels, the only one that got close to “page-turner” status for me was The Overnight.Ĭampbell’s writing is of undeniable quality, but the atmosphere is often heavy to the point of being oppressive. But I do recall some of that books imagery over ten years later, so it definitely had an effect on me. At the time, I had been working in retail for a while, so that may have been a part of the resonance. The Overnight was the only one out of ~5 novels that really got to me.
